The Heart Behind the Gift: A Mother’s Day Reflection
The Heart Behind the Gift: A Mother’s Day Reflection
Published by LEV Church
Mother’s Day is more than a calendar holiday. It’s a pause in the rhythm of life, a moment to reflect, remember, and celebrate the women who have shaped our stories with love, resilience, and sacrifice.
For many, it’s a joyful celebration. For others, it’s complicated, quiet, or even painful. But at its core, Mother’s Day is an invitation to honor the beauty of a mother’s heart, in all its many forms—and to see God’s heart reflected in it.
At LEV Church, we believe the heartbeat of a mother is one of the clearest pictures of God’s love on earth: faithful, selfless, watchful, and near.
A Legacy That Goes Beyond Time
Long before brunches and bouquets, long before department store displays and online gift guides—honoring mothers was always part of the story.
In ancient cultures, mothers were revered as life-bringers and nurturers.
In Jewish tradition, the command to “honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12) was not a suggestion—it was a covenant expectation.
In the early church, widows and spiritual mothers were respected and cared for (1 Timothy 5:1–5).
And in our time, Mother’s Day is a cultural moment—but it can be so much more than that.
Today, we pause to look beyond the wrapping paper and see the legacy of love—a love that outlives seasons, outlasts hardships, and often goes unseen.
Not Just the Gift, but the Heart Behind It
We live in a world where gifts can be measured in dollars or likes. But in the Kingdom of God, gifts are measured by heart.
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
—2 Corinthians 9:7 (ESV)
You don’t need to spend more to love more.
A handwritten note that says, “I see you.”
A prayer whispered in the kitchen.
A late-night phone call.
An act of service no one else notices.
These are the things that echo eternity. They reflect the heart of God, not just the hand of the giver.
Jesus once honored a widow who gave two small coins (Mark 12:41–44). It wasn’t the amount—it was the offering of her heart. The same is true today. When we give out of love, we give something heaven treasures.
A Mother’s Love Mirrors God’s Love
Motherhood is more than a role—it’s a reflection. Whether through biology, adoption, mentorship, or spiritual covering, mothers reveal something holy about God’s nature.
“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”
—Isaiah 66:13
The love of a mother is comforting, correcting, and covering. It’s fierce and gentle. It fights and it forgives. And even when imperfect, it reminds us that God draws near, especially in seasons of need.
And we also remember this: Jesus was mothered.
He experienced womb and weaning. He saw Mary’s tears.
He handed her to John at the cross (John 19:26–27).
The Savior of the world honored His mother—even in His final breath.
For the Mother. For the Not-Yet. For the Grieving. For the Remembering.
We recognize that not every Mother’s Day is easy.
Some are waiting.
Some are grieving.
Some are healing from absence, loss, or pain.
Some are raising children alone.
Some are spiritual mothers to dozens, even if no one calls them “Mom.”
To each of you—we honor your story.
We bless your journey.
We see your heart.
And we want you to know: God sees you too.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
—Psalm 34:18
What Does It Mean to Give from the Heart?
This year, we challenge you to go deeper than the surface. Ask yourself:
What would bless her soul—not just her schedule?
What can I say that affirms who she is in Christ, not just what she does?
How can I celebrate a woman who has mothered me spiritually—even if she never held me physically?
This kind of giving can’t be boxed or bought.
It flows from presence, prayer, and intentional love.
It’s the kind of gift that heaven sees—even if no one else does.
