“Scripture reading isn’t about mastering the Bible—it’s about letting it master you.”
That one sentence sums up this powerful week in our Holy Habits series.
So many of us have treated reading the Bible as a box to check or a rule to follow. But Scripture reading and meditation were never meant to be a performance—they’re meant to be an act of surrender.
This week, we explored the biblical command in Joshua 1:7–9 to meditate on God’s Word day and night. But biblical meditation isn’t about emptying your mind—it’s about filling it with truth. It’s not self-discovery—it’s God-discovery.
We also unpacked how:
Scripture reading was primarily communal in biblical times—not just private.
Meditation in Scripture means to roar, growl, and mutter aloud, like a lion declaring territory.
Church history has both wounded and advanced this practice, from monastic devotion to modern digital distractions.
Reading aloud, memorizing, and repeating God’s Word is spiritual warfare, a way of reclaiming ground the enemy wants to steal.
💡 We were challenged to stop chasing knowledge about God and start encountering the voice of God. Because Scripture reading and meditation aren’t just for learning—they’re for transformation.
🙌 Practical Ways to Live This Out:
Reframe your goal: It’s not about volume, but value.
Use tech wisely: Leverage Bible apps and audio tools.
Slow down: Less scrolling, more stillness.
Build micro-rhythms: Small daily check-ins with the Word.
Read in community: Out loud, with others.
Let the Bible master you—not the other way around.
🗣️ As Pastor Eddie shared:
“We don’t read the Bible just to be better people. We read it to know a better Savior.”
